Compass Rose Studio is a Scottish brand created by me Ruth McEvilly when redundancy led to a change in career. I had worked for over 20 years as a Textile Designer and needed a creative outlet, something to channel my design ideas. Purchasing some of the fabrics I had designed from Alexanders of Scotland Kirkburn Mill when it closed, was the first step to making products which showcase the wonderful qualities of wool and the colours inspired by the Scottish landscape.
The textile collection now also includes Celtic knot work silkscreen prints on linen which are combined with the tweed in an abstract style. Machine embroidery is also used to embellish the prints adding a further layer of interest. The Celtic range also has limited edition prints, pen and ink drawings tinted with muted colours plus knotwork collage pieces.
In 2018 my Husband Ged who had been making driftwood products for some years added his workshop space from which he now creates one off pieces using recycled wood adding copper, stamps, maps and old admiralty charts. He is drawn to nautical themes after his years spent in the Royal Navy and uses these motifs in some of the work he makes.
The studio is situated in a rural idyll with stunning views over the Aberdeenshire countryside an inspirational location. Working with locally sourced raw materials, recycling and re-purposing is an important part of our process. Our aim is to create a unique range of distinctive cushions, accessories and artwork which highlight the qualities of the beautiful Scottish tweed and the wonders of wood.
